The ‘Less is…’ Controversy

Within the last couple years I have gotten more into design methodology, planning methodology and the evaluation of code quality verses quantity. I read several blogs that attempt to broach this subject: lesscode.org and 37signals‘ blog. They’ve had a disagreement recently, which is fine, its none of my business… I don’t care. However, Jason’s post that I read about 2 minutes ago reminded me of something: Steve Wozniac. Steve was the keynote speaker at the Gnomedex several years back and that speech was presented as an MP3 on IT Conversations. What really grabbed me about his talk was not just the funny stories, which were sometimes hilarious, but also the that he took the limitations of his components to be a challenge of their optimization. If I can only have X then how can I make X as fast as possible? This is the mindset that all hardware designers, coders and product developers should have (unless the device is SUPPOSED to be slow 🙂 ).

Learn how to write already faster code. For example read books on speed optimization so that when you code you automatically use the loop type that is quickest for the language in your scenario (that means you need to know what type of loop is fastest in what scenario). I know in PHP that various appending operators for text strings are faster (‘,’ is faster than ‘.’), using single quotes instead of double quotes makes the page get processed faster because double quotes are always parsed for PHP variables. I recommend that you learn your language, know why C++ uses character arrays instead of string objects on a more basic level. In fact, learn why Java does that as well… if you’re using Java. But learn it and know it, you’ll be glad you did, and so will your employer if you have one. And if you’re self employed… this should be old news for you.

First Snow

We got our first snow of the season overnight. its only a couple inches at the present, but it is rather nice to see some white stuff. Of course our trees in the backyard are sagging down so far that I think they’re possibly going to be injured. Or, maybe they’re just doing tree yoga.

Grover Levy: Wrestling Angels

There is an album in my collection that I love. I think its one of the best Christian albums from the 90’s. When I first heard it I wasn’t impressed with the musical style because I was looking for Nirvana (the band, not the spiritual place). However, now that I’ve matured and widened my musical tastes I have to say that this album rocks. Sell a kidney, appendix or some of your lesser quality albums and find this one to buy used online. The album is out of print but is worth owning.

This album has lyrics that are so well thought out. There are polemics to encourage you to not fit into the status quo of Christendom, but also one song that stands out: “If You Want to Lead Me To Jesus” is just brilliant. Its about the Christian’s attitude towards evangelism. I have to confess that I often have thought that Christianity has become so generic in popular 1st world culture that there is no compelling reason for people to even look at it as a viable solution to the problem of sin and as a source of eternal purpose. This song is a kick in the shins to get you to think – check out lyrics like this:
(verse)
Your Message is clear
you sound so sincere
your intentions are good:
forgieveness of sin
life without end
I’d believe it if I could
But I’ve watched from afar
and I’ve seen how you are
with the people around
And I don’t see a trace
of the love and the grace
you talk so much about

(chorus)
If you want to lead me to Jesus
you better find a better way
‘Cause your life is speaking so loud
I can’t even hear a word you say

If winning the duel is your golden rul
no matter the cost
then you may win the day
but the price you pay
is the greater war that’s lost
you would not believe
how different it seems
from the outside looking in
but the louder you shout
the more I tune out
and the less I am convinced
(bridge)
I want to believe but I’m gonna need you to work with me here
word with me here, work with me here

Mark Townsend, a brilliant guitarist and musician in his own right, plays guitars on this and added a quality influence to the music. You can’t lose if you pick this album up, its just about my favorite album of the 90’s (in hindsight).  If you like the wit of Steve Taylor… then this album is for you.

Her Appendage Doth Append

This morning Jessica said, “Randy, feel this.” Which, as I learned in junior high, can be a bad thing. You see, then I was asked to place my hand into a bag, feel something I couldn’t see, and then attempt to tell the person what it was. I was always afraid someone had somehow gotten a wild wolverine to hold still long enough for me to cram my hand into the bag… fortunately that was not a problem this morning. Instead I felt one of Evie’s appendages protruding from Jessica’s belly in a very intense way.

Wow, this baby has got to come out soon.

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

Please don’t get bumped and have a fall.

This morning when I took out the trash it was actually kind of cold… and the leaves all over the ground were a lovely shade of orange. It was kind of weird. It was like fall was arriving. Finally!

Oh, and here’s a picture of the Abigator to help you realize that fall is here and she is getting older. Mommy had not had a chance to do her hair yet, but she demanded pictures (yeah!)
Abby

Happy Anniversary, My Bride!

Today is 7 years for Jessica and I. I was so amazingly anxious, its not even funny. Actually, it’s hilarious to look back on. I was so nervous that I could not iron a shirt I needed to wear after the reception. I drove the shirt over to my parents’ house where my Grandma Martin was at. She ironed it for me. And it was then that she gave me the best sex advice I had gotten at that time: Be a gentleman. She said, “Your grandpa was such a gentleman the night of our honeymoon.” Which sounded like it was going to lead to a conversation that had too much information. However, that’s all she said (and Randy rejoiced for fear of hearing about grandparent sex).

Jessica and I have been through all sorts of crazy stuff since this day seven years ago, but I’ve loved it all because we’ve grown close, together.
