Jessica told me this evening that Gilmore Girls is being cancelled. If you don’t know who or what Gilmore Girls is… you’re lucky. Its one of the weirdest television shows since the X-Files. But instead of being freaky they go for quirky comedy but end up coming across as a combination of having the flu and Groundhog’s Day (the movie) combined. Each episode is exactly the same. Sure, the ‘plot’ changes, or at least re-orders the events a little, but each episode is about a mom and a daughter who are both ADD/ADHD and who have the emotional stability of a woman in labor. I take that back. Women in labor are more stable than these two gals. To top it of there are men [MEN!] on the show who are also emotionally unstable. The upshot is that the humor on the show (I’m not making this up, they actually consider it humor) is entirely non-sequiturs. Entirely. Completely. Fully. Monotonously. Here I will attempt to give you a script (pulled out of my scary imagination) that represents this show:
Scene: Inside of the house the mother is on the phone with the daughter.
Mom: “Rory, if I’ve told you once, I’ve told you a kabillion times I’m fine.”
Daughter: “Mom, I’ve lived with you since I was in your womb, I know when you’re not fine.” [to be said with a straight face because its not a non-sequitur]
Mom: “Rory, it was my womb, and you still owe me rent.”
Daughter: “I didn’t have any money at the time, but I think I can sell pictures of myself like that Barba gal from American Idol…”
[End Scene before I throw up in my mouth]
Its not good writing, and the acting is dry, but not funny dry like the Brit-coms.
Good-bye Gilmore Girls. I hope all of the ‘actors’ find other ‘roles’ that ‘suit’ them but are not type-cast as mannequins.
One of the biggest problems with GG is that they confuse good and entertaining dialog with fast and banal dialog. It is an easy mistake. Watching GG is as entertaining and fulfilling as eating lunch at the junior high girls table.
I think all of your people need to stop complaining and help bring them back. For one this is one of the last shows that is good for the family to watch. This is a big mistake on CW part.
I’m going to respectfully disagree because this show does not exemplify moral virtue. I would not want my four year old to watch that show. It isn’t family oriented at all to me. I’m sorry they’re taking your show off of the air, but the reason I am told they’re going away is because “Rory” doesn’t want to come back for another season.
Randy,
Are you on crack? Gilmore Girls is a totally family-oriented show. These are real people who love each other no matter what. That IS family! And who the heck would let a 4 year old watch night-time TV anyway? The show had a wonderful 7 year run, no thanks to you are your moral-high horse.
Dino
Dino, my crack smoking days were numbered and short and by numbered and short I mean never. If you (and others) will read closely you will discover that this post has been categorized (among other things) as “satirical” and “wordplay.” That should imply to all readers that this is to be taken as a light hearted, snarky, foot-loose and fancy free post. Oh, and its also listed under “Opinion.”
As for showing night time television to my four year old, I don’t. But the problem, as is often the case in misunderstandings, was in definition. When I think of ‘family entertainment’ I think of childrens cartoons from Pixar or maybe Curious George, but not night time television. We had our definitions mixed up: mine were for my family and yours were for your definition which I’m not sure of.
As for moral high-horses I’m a fan of grace within the Christian system as outlined by the Apostle Paul. I find moral relativism useless, and postmodernism a hoax. We can discuss religion, money, politics, sex and philosophy, but the comments of this generally random blog are probably not an ideal place for that. You can contact me via email if you find that to your taste.
