The CD is 25 Years Old

The audio CD is 25 years old.  I remember getting my first CD: Queen’s soundtrack to Highlander.  I believe my second CD was Diamond Rio (yes, I bought a country album).  After that I don’t remember.  I’m glad that I can buy all digital now 🙂

Tough Day

Today was a tough day for the girls.  They were both out of sorts.  Evie has some teeth coming and and I’m not 100% sure what’s getting to Abby.  She’ll be five in two weeks (22nd) and she’s just been disobedient and she fell a few times from her jungle gym in the backyard.

Jessica spent much of the day scrubbing the kitchen down from top to bottom.  It looks fantastic.  She just told me it, ” was so disgusting.”  And by my standards it was looking OK.  Apparently she’s just got higher standards 😉  Actually, the kitchen gets dirty fast because both girls, as old as they are, have a way of trashing any area within minutes of entry.  Some people might even go so far as to say seconds from entry.  I would be one of those people.

The last thing that made today tougher is that my buddy Dave, whom I have worked with as a co-worker or as a contractor for years now, is moving on to another company.  He’s a really, really sharp guy, a neat brother in the Lord, and he’s also funny.  All three of those things made working with him great and I’m sure that the folks at his new place of employment will really enjoy him for those reasons and more.

Reminder: Tonight is Feasting on Asphalt 2!

Just in case you had forgotten tonight, Saturday August 4th, is Feasting on Asphalt 2 night!  We’re having my sister and her husband over and we’ll be eating jambalaya in celebration of Alton’s starting off his journey in the southern part of the United States.  We’re hoping that we can follow along on this culinary adventure every weekend with some parallel food based on our understanding of the different regions followed by watching the episode from the DVR (thus fast forwarding through the commercials that would keep us from the actual fun).

I guess this makes us junkies 🙂

Feasting on Asphalt 2

Last year Jessica and I really enjoyed Feasting on Asphalt – a tour across the width of the United States on back roads with Alton Brown & his production crew. Love it. Watched each episode at least once and most of them twice. We’re that sick. But its coming up again and they’ll be premiering season two this Saturday night on the Food Network. Set your DVRs, rescheduled your otherwise important events and check it out.

You can learn more on Alton Brown’s site.

Garage Sailing

This weekend we had a garage sale.  It wasn’t a huge affair but we offloaded a lot of junk to other families who seemed to think they needed them.  We had lots of baby stuff that new grandparents were excited to pick up and I learned some new things about people.  Some people were negotiators and some people were glad to get things at less than store prices.  Some people didn’t speak English.  One gal was kindly garage saling with a woman who was severely handicapped.  She helped me understand the woman and monitored the purchases to make sure that all of her money was spent.

I had one family show up and they low balled me on my PS2 – I didn’t flinch.  They paid for most of what they picked up in quarters.  I would have been unhappy accepting quarters for a PS2 🙂  The sale went well and we got to know a few neighbors as well.

The officially best moment for me was the group of guys stacking a couch & seat on top of a mini van and throwing ropes over the top.  Something about it looked horribly catastrophic.  They drove away and I didn’t find shattered couches near our house so I hope that they got it back to their domicile.

Scabby Abby

Last night Abby had a fall at the park while I was at Bible Study at the Doyle’s.  She scraped up her knees, her left arm (yes, she’s left handed like several of her grandparents and her mother), the left side of her face and her nose.  She’s OK, but she’s rather scabby.  She’s a sweetheart though and is toughing it out rather well.

Slight Site Tweak

For the few of you that read this blog within a browser and not through RSS, I’ve made a small number of changes that should hopefully help you.

  • I’ve set the categories to indent so that its easier to find categories that are of the sub nature
  • I’ve added a small blog-roll. I’ve got more sites that I track, but these come recommended for general readership (more will be added over time)
  • I’ve removed the archives. I have archives dating back to about the time that Cortez was sailing around looking for West Indians to kill with disease, swords and social networks.

A lesser known fact is that the Pordcast has moved to https://randypeterman.com/thepordcast/. Since its not active at the moment that’s not a huge loss. I do plan to resurrect it in the next few months with a new series on finances. Something that I know far too little about but plan on exploring and sharing with you what I find. As long as its not West Indians with socialized medicine and a penchant for corn roasted over bat guano.

I’m Bringing Sexy Backup

Sorry for the Justin Timberlake reference.  I’ll confess to not actually having heard his ‘hit’ single, so if that reference makes you want to throw up in your mouth, I’m even more apologetic.  That being said, please backup your hard drive today.  If you don’t have an external hard drive that gets backed up to on a regular basis, please stop what you’re doing, even at the risk of getting fired, and get one.  Get the external hard drive, copy your files from your internal hard drive onto the external hard drive.  Do it now.  Do it today, or if you must put it off, do it this weekend, but don’t put it off or else you could lose critical things like those blackmail pictures you have of your [insert being/entity/person/senator reference here] in their [insert some awkward piece of clothing here] while [insert embarrassing or illegal activity here].  Or you could just lose important documents like papers for school, papers for work, papers for church, or even worse, papers for the government.

If you’re running Windows XP you can tell it to backup all of your files automatically!  Just go to Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Backup.  Then follow the wizard.  Figure out if all of your valuable files are in your My Documents folders or if you want to backup the whole system and then set up a schedule.  Have it backup once a week or daily, but have it backup your computer or valuable files regularly.  Once that’s done you can rest knowing that unless your external hard drive fails you’ve at least got things preserved.

I setup a network wide backup at my house this week using an Airport Extreme USB connected external hard drive so that all computers backup onto one drive every night.  If I were more clever once a week/month I’d take a second external drive to my parents or some other ‘safe’ place and keep one there, too.  Just in case.

Sure, backing up data isn’t sexy, but its smart.  So listen to Justin Timberlake and backup at the same time, then you can be both.

Congrats Ed & Shari

Congratulations Ed & Shari on your new baby girl.  I’m sure proud to be an uncle again!  Baby was born at 7:47, which couldn’t be more appropriate since one of her grandpas is a pilot.  Latest news is that all is well, and that’s terrific news!
