WordPress 1.2

Well, I did the upgrade to WordPress, and other than having to fix the blunders that I had made while previously tinkering with the database (Note to self, don’t tinker with that which you don’t fully understand). Now I’m going to just have to re-work the stylesheet to use a look similar to the www.randypeterman.com main site.

There are quite a few new changes to the administration part of the software that are really nice. I think that the developers have understated the improvements by simply calling it 1.2. Unless they’re going for a Sun type maneouver where they’ll create a lot of enhancements call it a point release and then everyone will expect that a point release just means that they’ve created a new version. Some day when Java 2.0 comes out Java will be amazing (theoretically) and some day when WordPress 2.0 comes out, well, who knows, I might be able to think my blog entries and they’ll automagically show up.

Great software!

Soccer on the Brain

OK, so others may call it football. Whatever you might call it I played it today, but unfortunately I had a good time. After church we went to the park (ironically called Bible Park, named after James A. Bible) and played with several families. We had a blast and Abby enjoyed the swings and what not. Jessica enjoyed the company of the other gals, but I had the most fun playing foot-cer.

At one point in time I took a ball to the face as I was trying to head-butt the ball. It went lower than I expected and so now on top of my red (sunburned) skin I’ve got a bruise on my face that makes me look like my wife beats me.
my face hurts.

I can’t wait to do it all again. This was a blast and I loved the exercise. I was pretty well winded the first half of the first game, but I started to catch my stride by the second half. In the end we won the first game we were playing (4-on-4) and I scored a couple goals. The second game however was quite different, we got spanked but had fun doing so. Everyone should play soccer, with the exception of people without feet.

Alias Phreaks Untie!

If you’re like my wife, you’re married to me. In which case I’m either Mormon or a patriarch. Or, if you’re like my wife in other ways you like Alias, the show about a female CIA agent who was secretly tricked several seasons ago into thinking that she worked for the agency under a top-secret part of the agency that was not really the agency. If you can’t quite follow that I’d restate it this way: the show’s about treachery, computer technology that could not possibly work, and off-screen romance. It’s like a soap opera without the return of actors from the dead. Oh, wait, there are returning actors from the dead in Alias, too. Oh, and they punch, kick and perform unwanted dental work on one another.

Anyway, Alias is having its last episode tonight and Brian and Jillia are getting together with Jessica to watch the last episode. Don’t even think about calling around 8:00 PM or later tonight unless its an emergency or you’re the executives from ABC calling to say that you’re not moving Alias to start in January 2005. Actually, I thank you for this since I’ll get my wife back on Sunday nights 😉

The Last Samurai

We watched “The Last Samurai” last night. We started it at around 9:30 and went to bed shortly after 12:00. A long, but pretty good movie. It was not too much about fighting. It was a movie that actually, and I’m not making this up, tried to have a plot line. And not only a plot line it skimmed the surface of morality. What I found to be interesting was that Tom Cruise was invincible. They didn’t come out and say it, but it was heavily implied. Every other Samurai dies and a white guy who has been shot enough times to make Swiss cheese look like it doesn’t have that many holes in it lives on and is pretty darn mobile. Enough of the mockery.

I would recommend this movie to people who liked Cast Away because in many ways Tom Cruise is like Tom Hanks. They both have longer facial hair after a while, they both stink after a while, and they both talk to volleyballs. Wait, no, they don’t both talk to volleyballs. They do both have hallucinations though. Both have minor surgical procedures performed without anesthesia and both wear Nike or Nikkei [Somebody stop me before I get hurt]. However, they both are stranded only Tom Cruise is stranded all alone in a village full of people. Almost no-one speaks English, which works to Tommy’s advantage because it gives him an opportunity to learn Japanese.

There is a slight love interest in the story as Tom falls for the wife of (one of) the Samurai he kills, and becomes a father-figure to her two sons. He also has a slightly odd scene with this actress where she undresses him (fortunately you only get to see his chest) and then dresses him in her husbands old Halloween costume [Samurai outfit]. Somewhere towards the middle of it all he kisses her and she starts to cry. That’s it. The story of their love ends there… every movie with fighting and warriors should have that much romance. Vin Diesel needs to take a cue on this as in his movies he makes out with volleyballs for hours.

There is a great cameo by Billy Connolly, who plays a High School teacher in an older TV show. Ooops, he plays a soldier who is arrogant, and like all arrogant soldiers he dies from samurai weapons. Look at the volleyball in Cast Away – another ruthless example of death by samurai weapons.

The emperor of Japan is played by a woman who has had facial hair glued onto her face and who speaks Engrish fluently.

All in all, you should see this movie because, even though I’ve completely made fun of it here, it is good. I would give it a 8 out of ten stars, or if it was a ‘five flea’ rating scale 4.5 fleas (I’d rip the flea’s wings off for the half flea difference).

Ella Kathryn White

Ella was born last night at 8:45 PM and is a gorgeous little girl. Baby boys, there are going to be a lot of cute little girls to flirt with, but I must ask that the girls keep the standards high. The higher your standards are the higher the guys will work to meet them.

Also, I’m going to try to upgrade to the latest version of WordPress soon (it’s supposed to be a quick upgarde), but if I screw it up then the site could go down for a bit. I’m going to back everything up beforehand (boy have I done some fun things without backing up, shame on me).

Baby Coming

No, not for us. Our friends, Brian and Jillia, have been in labor all day long and I’ve been helping Brian keep updates on their blog. They get WAY more comments than I do 🙂

Blog of a Former Student of Mine

A former student of mine has written about
her concerns about getting married, dating and God’s will. What is so cool is that her perspective is right on with this. Often when we get distracted by things that look like they’re big (and lets face it, getting married is huge) we forget the most important thing: our relationship with Christ. If God’s character is as the Bible describes Him then we’ve got nothing to worry about (and I contend that it is, and most likely much more wonderful than our finite languages can handle).

Right on.

New Look for Main Site

I’ve updated the look for the Digital Research & Development site using my new logo. The Style is called Montan. Because the new logo has a mountain on it I decided to go with a name that matched. Montan is our friends, the Black’s, son’s name. I suppose that I’ll have to create a theme for their other two boys now, too.

Let me know if you have any problems with it. It’s got a few CSS hacks that I hope to clean up, but what can you do? I’ll probably convert this blog to look just like it for consistency’s sake.
