We’re frustrated with our local phone company and their long distance service. We’re moderately pleased with their DSL service. However, when we moved they wanted to charge us $100.00 for relocating our DSL service. Jessica called and raised all sorts of noise and they eventually reduced it to $9.99. Why they can charge that much and get away with it is beyond me. Why they can drop it by such a huge percentage is also beyond me. We’re looking to switch to Comcast’s cable internet connectivity and then switching to Vonage so that we can start singing the annoying ‘hooting’ song from their commercials.
Anyone got any reasons why we shouldn’t do that? Is the service of either of these companies bad?
We’ve been using Vonage for a while now and I have to say we’ve been EXTREMELY happy with it. The biggest issue that I’ve run into is that our Tivo doesn’t use the service correctly so we’ve got an annoying nag screen on the TV about it not calling in. I guess I’ll have to work it out at some point. 🙂 The only other issue that I can think of at the moment is that my old USB wireless Netgear drops it’s signal when we use the phone but I have a suspicion that it has more to do with the cordless phone than Vonage. Oh, and don’t expect any customer service from Vonage – it’s pretty much non-existant. Although their forums are filled with relatively helpful folks.
Dave, you can get TiVo to work with it.. it just takes a lot of time and frustration.
However, if you have a DirecTivo (as we do) the unit doesn’t need to call out AT ALL once guided set up is done. It will still nag you, but the call is only used to report usage and PPV and such. The satellite downloads the program info. 🙂 So, I just cancelled Vonage.
Randy – make sure to have a friend refer you to Vonage so they can get a credit! BTW, if you do make long phone calls, Vonage might not be the way to go – it always dropped me after 4 hours. 🙂
If we’re on the phone for 4 hours at a time I’ve got other issues 🙂
Oh and I wanted to say, Vonage has recently become one of those companies where it’s next to impossible to get someone live on the phone. I tried to cancel and they took a message to call me back because their cancellation department was busy. Of course they didn’t call me back. They charge a $42 cancellation fee until you return the equipment.
Did you look at any of the alternatives to Vonage?
Yes, but not enough to say I’ve done a lot of research. Jessica was impressed with the pricing and that’s about where we stand 🙂
