3 John 1:4 (NASB)
I have no greater joy than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth.
I am constantly reminded that this world is full of almost-truth, no truth and farthest from the truth. I am a strong proponent of ‘absolute truth.’ Absolute truth is the idea that truth is not just personal opinion, but exists outside of mankind [and as a Christian it resides in God]. A popular philosophy some time ago was called ‘modernism.’ Modernism said that man could figure out truth through science. That fell short since you can’t scientifically prove a lot of things. So then the philosophy of ‘post-modernism’ developed. Post-modernism involves the idea that there is no absolute truth at all. In short, everything is an opinion and everything is relativistic. Relativism clings to the self-cancelling statement: There is no absolute truth.
So, as Christians, how do we walk in truth? Well, we need to know what truth is. Christ called himself truth (John 14:6) and similarly Paul Calls Christ wisdom (I Corinthians 1:24). If we study God’s word and read it we will get to know Christ. It is important to remember that God’s word is a physical manifestation of Him (John 1). If we walk in our lives thinking about Christ, His word, and trusting the Holy Spirit to guide us, we will bring joy to God the Father because of our relationship with Him. The Christian faith is about relationship and not a list of do’s and don’t’s. It is not about what, but Who. And the Who is Christ.
Truth is a result of God, it can only be defined in the context of a God who created it. Truth is not an abstract idea that we hold up and say, “Yes, God has some of this stuff that we define as truth.” Instead God tells us that He is truth, He created truth, and we acknowledge it and appropriate it in our lives.
Mike Doyle, an elder at our body here, said something recently that really hit this home for me.
God gave us every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3). Therefore, God doesn’t give us little bits to grow on since in His eyes, we’re fully grown[!]. Instead, He waits for us to appropriate the blessings that He’s given us. We can only appropriate the truths we learn from His word. Therefore, lets stay in His word and grow in our knowledge of truth until He returns!
