Things, Goings On, and Stuff I write

Happy Birthday to Becky Katzorke

Happy Birthday to Becky, my really, really, really old younger sister. She’s 23 today. So if she’s really, really, really old then I guess that makes me parents nearly dinosaurs and my grandparents must have been friends with Adam and Eve when they were younger. Or I could be blowing things out of proportion.

Either way, happy birthday Becky Jane.

Princess Diana’s Maiden Name

Tonight we had some company so that we could get to know some folks from Bible study. We played the game ‘Battle of the Sexes’ after dinner (Abby tried to help but quickly lost interest). In that game the guys get asked questions oriented slightly more towards women, and the women get more masculine questions. Or at least that’s the way the game is marketed. Ben, one of our guests, was paired with me, and Kate, his girlfriend and our other guest, was paired with Jessica. The gals made us look like the Denver Broncos playing the Steelers. We lost pretty bad. However, good fun was had by all and I learned that Princess Diana’s maiden name was… Oh, heck, I forget – I guess you’ll have to look it up.

Ye Olde Footballe

Today I had a brief party at my house wherein we watched some [American] football and consumed food. The food was good, I’ve had better football. The Denver Broncos, our home team, played so well that they gave a great demonstration of what not to do, while the Pittsburg Steelers (where, apparently I have some family heritage. No, not in steel, but Pittsburg) rocked the socks off of the locals. Yes, it was much like beating a dead horse.

Then, to make sure that my brother-in-law and his wife would have a good laugh saying, “Seattle is better than Denver,” the Seattle Seahawks spanked the Carolina Panthers. That is to say that the Panthers lost even worse than the Broncos. I didn’t know that two teams could be in the playoffs and have their playing be so off! Hey, at least the Colts, where my father-in-law is from, Indianapolis, weren’t playing… then it would be like a family feud, and we can’t have that.

Oh, and the Broncos did have a severe disadvantage this game: they hadn’t lost any other home game this season which put them at a near absolute situation where they would lose. I blame statistics and not the fact that Jake Plummer threw two interceptions and fumbled – its all in the numbers.

Snow-Brainer

OK. There is about 2 inches – maybe 3 – of snow on the ground. Denver is devastated because people don’t know how to drive on the snow. I’ve got a dental appointment in about a 2 hours and I’m probably going to have to leave one hour from now due to goofy road conditions. So here is a list of appropriate driving approaches when you’re driving in the snow for the few readers who find snow driving difficult to grasp:

  1. Drive slowly. Your reaction time will be useless on slick or icey roads.
  2. Pump your breaks if you start sliding. That is don’t just put your foot on the floor assuming that you will stop sliding due to a greater amount of fear.
  3. Turn into a slide. That is if you turn left and your back end starts sliding out from behind you turn your stearing wheel to the right to straighten out and gain control.
  4. Did I mention slow down?

There. Those aren’t hard, but when you’re in an out of control situation having those reactions is not logical, so try to keep your wits about you and leave early, drive slowly and be respectful of the road condition.

New Years Resolphbphbphbt

So we had a goal of losing some weight and keeping it off this century. Unfortunately we’re off to a bad start having been sick all week long. This thing has been tenacious like nothing else. However, I’m glad for our relative well being as one of my friends in Texas had to have emergency appendicitis surgery last night. Hopefully he’s well – I haven’t heard one way or the other yet.

Other goals for the year were to become trillionaires by the 8th, which is tomorrow. We’re 1.0 × 10-12 of the way there 🙂 I don’t think we’ll make it, but it was low on the list. Along with a disgusting amount of wealth we wanted to try to become invincible – we’ll have to wait and see how this one goes – I’ll let you know if we’ve not achieved this goal. I’d also like to spell correctly all the time, have perfect grammar and not have to be reminded all the time about how much my math skills have weekened since graduating from second grade and dropping out of elementary school.

What has weirded me out this last week is that Jessica continues to discuss Abby’s education. As if Abby actually will be educated. I’d prefer her to stay little and be my baby girl from here-on foreward. Evie, also, is not allowed to get older. Well, not really, there would be some benefit to them growing up, but I love my little girls. I think we’ll just keep having to have babies as time goes on, though Jessica wholeheartedly agrees with the contrary idea: no more kiddos.

My resolution for this year will be this: to blog with more pictures of my girls. My Nikon 5700 has just about driven me crazy. I’m ready to send it to Nikon and say, “Take this camera, and shove it.” It has just been a frustrating experience more times than not. Such is life. At least we have our cheap 3 megapixel camera that takes decent snapshots, which is what we need to document the craziness of our little girls.

OK, I better get off the blog, Jess is off the phone. See you later.

Microsoft Windows Media Format Patch

Some of you may be running Windows. If that’s the case you’ll want to install this update right away if you’re using Internet Explorer: Download details: Security Update for Windows XP (KB912919).

Here’s the thing: Internet Explorer is a security nightmare. If you are running Internet Explorer it looks at files with any sort of graphical extension and then ignores the fact that it is a graphical extension with a specific name and then tries to render it how it thinks it should. Thus, if someone runs the Windows Media File exploit on an image ending with GIF (a different graphics format) Internet Explorer ignores that it can’t render the image as a GIF file and runs the Windows Media File executing the attack!

Please, after installing that patch, install Firefox or Opera.

Did You Have To Let it Linger?

We’re all sick around here still with a cold. How annoying is that? Abby is quite put out that we’d not play with her us much as normal but we’re both rather tired (both = Jessica and I). Even Evie is sleeping more and doing a bit of coughing at times. So… pray for our health and well-being, it’ll be a while until we’re all better, I fear, but tonight we go to the doctor so I’m hoping that will help.

Much Better

Yesterday I posted that I wasn’t feeling all that well. Today Jessica, Abby, and Evie are all not feeling 100%. Go figure. I am feeling better, but they are feeling worse. Further, Jessica and I were planning on starting our competition to see who could lose 300 pounds first**. Being sick slows us down a few days but we’ll be back at it once we’re all better. My goals for early 2006 include learning to ride the unicycle (which is rather intense) and to lose some weight so that I can be buff like my brother and brother-in-law Kurt. Or buff like Buffy the vampire slayer. She must be buff with a name like that.

Of course one of the biggest problems with being well built is that everyone asks you to open up stuck pickle jar lids, lift their cars so that they can change their flat tires and bend spoons with your mind. I think I’ll be up to those tasks if I can just learn how to ride that “won wheeled wonder.” Of course the problem with riding a unicycle while buff is that people will think you’re a really, really weird guy to spend so much time working out and then wasting it on a unicycle instead of becoming a super hero. Sometimes its tough to be a super-hero-unicycle rider, but someone’s got to do it. And that someone is not me.

** That’s not a typo, its a joke.

Sicko

I have been sick all day long, starting out with a cold and then churning right on into a flu-like pukefest. However, I’m feeling somewhat better now and hope to be ‘right as rain’ tomorrow. Of course I don’t want to be right like acid rain, which would be a completely bad thing, I’d rather be more constructive. Speaking of weird rain don’t the skittles commercials that have skittle raining down on everything scare the snot out of you? I mean how on earth could that be good for the environment? Corn Syrup all over, food coloring all over, and it would have to hurt like hail when it hit you. I can’t see that as being good at all.
