I believe that it was in the seminal work Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy that the author, Douglas Adams, implied that humans restate the obvious. I’d like to say that along with that we ask the obvious. Bill Engvall of course has a great comedy routine wherein he talks about ‘giving people their sign.’ This morning I ran into an inquisitive mind that asked an obvious question and it took everything within me to not just mock the question.
Why is it that the innocence of youth slowly turns into the impatience and senility of near thirtiness?
– The Old Codger
This year, me being old and wrinkly (31), I have stopped exerting so much energy on filtering my thoughts before they reach my mouth. As such, in the last month or so, I have freely enjoyed the act of mocking stupid questions.
For some reason, walking through a building with my mtn. bike or my bike helmet induces people to ask such mentally challenged questions.
“Did you ride your bike?”
“No, I was working on it this weekend and crazy-glued my hand to the handlebars.”
“Are you going bike riding?”
“No, I always carry this helmet around. I’m hoping if I trip and fall down, I can get it on my head before it hits the floor.”
